Schaumburg & Polk, Inc. (SPI) uses state-of-the-art technology and software to provide customized LIDAR surveying and mapping services to support our client’s needs from conception to completion. LIDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a method for measuring distances using lasers. This technology is being utilized by SPI to provide survey and mapping services to our clients. One inherent benefit of using LIDAR Technology, rather than photogrammetry, for aerial survey and mapping is the ability to measure surfaces below vegetation and tree canopy. Usually, if the sky can be seen through the canopy of the trees, then the ground can be mapped by this technology. The LIDAR system SPI has selected may be deployed multiple ways which allows for extreme flexibility in the methods by which the data can be collected. This system can be mounted on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Truck or ATV, or be carried on a backpack where the use of vehicles or a UAV is impractical or forbidden. This LIDAR system is paired with a high-resolution camera when carried on the UAV to provide High-Resolution Aerial Imagery in addition to the high-resolution ground scans provided by the LIDAR System.
Effective Uses For LIDAR include:
- Topographic Surveying
- Stockpile Volumetric Analysis
- Landfill Surveys
- Utility Inspection
- Change Detection
- Construction Progress Tracking
- As-Built Surveys
- Roadway and Utility Route Analysis
- Land Development and Planning
- Waterway and Flooplain Mapping
- Municipal and City Parks and Trails Planning
- Storm Damage Assessments
