The West Tawakoni City Council awarded a contract Tuesday night for the construction of a new ground water storage tank.

Travis Reed of Schaumburg & Polk, Inc., the city’s engineering firm on the project, said his company recommended the council accept the low bid submitted. Capps-Capco’s bid of $474,000 was accepted.

The other two bids received were close with the amounts of $480,000 and $489,000.

Reed said construction should begin within about a month after the necessary paperwork was completed. He said construction time was 120 days, and the tank should be completed before the end of the year.

The tank is a part of the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) project for water system improvements. The council gave its approval for the TWDB loan for $1,125,000 in Feb. 2016.

The tank construction answers a critical need that was first brought to the council’s attention in July 2013 by former Mayor Calvin Travers.

At that time, Travers passed along a report from divers who investigated the inside of the current tank and indicated the top of the tank could collapse within six months. Later investigations showed the tank needed work but was not in grave condition, even by the company that had sent the first investigators, Travers said.

The current tank that will also be rehabilitated and must remain in operation while the new tank is constructed.
